The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, and a challenge.

So I took the plunged.

When I was in seventh grade I hated reading. Which of course was probably the time in my life in which I had the most time for reading. Go figure. In my reading class we had to read a certain amount of pages during the semester, so I chose The Hobbit, and the Lord of the rings, these 4 books would get me a little more then was required, while other kids were reading 8 or 9 books.

To my credit I really did try reading them. They were just a bit too much for me at the time, so instead I watched the cartoon movies (this was pre Peter Jackson) and since I had never really read any books before that point I was unaware that movies and books are not even close to the same. So of course I got a bad grade in that class, and these books have been tainted every since.

As I got older however I started reading. My first serious book was Magician, by Raymond E. Feist (a great series). From then on I read all the time, but it was not until the other day when I posted a top 100 book list from NPR that I realized I was potentially missing a great adventure by continusing to shun the Tolkien Series. I loved the movies, both the cartoon versions as well as the live action. So in honor of the upcoming Hobbit movies I went out the other day and purchased the series, and began reading the Hobbit.

Wouldn’t you know it, I love it. I love the way it is written, I love the detail that isn’t in the movies. I love reading of things I am familiar with as an adult, and learning all the new things I never knew.

So I challenge each of you to find a book from your childhood. Maybe one you never finished, maybe one you did, but just didn’t like, and give it another shot. I would love to hear about it!
